Since the 1990s, the LGBT community faces regular attacks. These acts of violence come from very different groups. Some are Islamist, others are white supremacists.

In 1990, a gay bar in New York is attacked. It is the first documented Islamist attack on an LGBT venue. This event marks the beginning of organized violence.

For over thirty years, LGBT venues have been targeted regularly. Bars, clubs, and public events are attacked. These attacks kill and injure people in multiple countries.

In 2016, the Pulse nightclub in Orlando is attacked. An armed man kills 49 people. It is one of the deadliest anti-LGBT attacks in history.

The attackers' motivations vary, but results remain identical. LGBT people are targeted simply for being LGBT. Hatred lies at the heart of these violent acts.

White supremacism is also a serious threat. Far-right groups attack LGBT events and venues. They view the LGBT community as a threat to their ideology.

In 2026, Berlin's Pride is attacked by an Islamist attacker. This event shows the threat persists. Major LGBT celebrations remain vulnerable targets.

Facing these threats, LGBT event security is strengthened significantly. Police and security officers protect Pride events. Yet fear remains present in the community.

LGBT organizations demand more state protection measures. They also want anti-LGBT hatred recognized better. These attacks must be treated as terrorism entirely.

Over thirty years of attacks show a harsh reality. Being openly LGBT can still cost lives. The struggle for safety and dignity continues everywhere worldwide.
