In the United States, conversion therapy is a serious problem. It is a practice that tries to change someone's sexual orientation or gender identity. Every major medical and mental health organization agrees: it does not work. It also causes real harm, especially to young people.

So far, 20 states and Washington, D.C. have banned conversion therapy. This is an important step forward. But a recent ruling by the Supreme Court has changed things. The court ruled against Colorado's ban on conversion therapy. This decision has alarmed many LGBTQ+ people, allies, and advocates across the country.

The ruling could open the door to more conversion therapy practices. Many people are now worried about what happens next. LGBTQ+ organizations are calling for stronger protections at the federal level.

One group is especially vulnerable: Black LGBTQ+ youth. Research shows they face a double burden. They deal with racism in LGBTQ+ spaces and homophobia or transphobia in their communities. Conversion therapy often takes place in religious settings. For many Black families, the church is a central part of life. This makes it harder for young people to escape or speak out.

Survivors are now sharing their stories. Many describe feeling shame, fear, and deep emotional pain. Some say the experience caused lasting mental health problems. Depression, anxiety, and thoughts of suicide are common among survivors.

Advocates say it is time to listen to these voices. Black LGBTQ+ survivors have often been left out of the wider conversation. Their experiences are only now beginning to be understood and taken seriously.

Mental health experts are clear: conversion therapy must be stopped. Young people need support, not attempts to change who they are. Safe and affirming spaces are essential for healthy development.

The fight against conversion therapy continues. Activists are pushing for a nationwide ban. They say no young person should suffer because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Black LGBTQ+ youth deserve protection, acceptance, and love.
