Since December 2025, approximately one hundred dermatophilosis cases were reported across Europe. This bacterial infection primarily affects men who have sex with men.

Dermatophilosis is caused by a bacterium called Dermatophilus congolensis. It causes painful skin lesions on the body. These wounds can appear on various body parts.

This new infection recalls the 2022 mpox epidemic. Back then, mpox also affected many gay and bisexual men. The LGBTQ+ community faced significant stigmatization at that time.

Both diseases received problematic nicknames. Mpox was called "monkeypox." Dermatophilosis is sometimes nicknamed "mud scabies." These names can fuel prejudices against certain groups.

Experts urge people not to panic. Dermatophilosis is not strictly a sexually transmitted disease. It spreads through direct skin contact. However, intimate contact increases transmission risk.

Doctors can treat this infection with antibiotics. It is important to consult a doctor quickly. Early diagnosis allows faster healing.

LGBTQ+ community health organizations respond rapidly. They share clear and non-judgmental information. The goal is informing without stigmatizing the community.

European health authorities monitor the situation closely. They remind that this infection should not be linked only to gay men. Anyone can be exposed to this bacterium.

If you notice unusual skin lesions, consult a doctor. Speak openly about your sexual practices with your healthcare provider. This enables better diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Vigilance is necessary, but stigmatization is dangerous. It discourages affected people from seeking help. Taking care of your health remains the most important message.
