What Queer People Need to Know About the Parasite in Your Salad

A parasite found on fresh produce is causing serious stomach illness this summer. Cuts to health agencies like the CDC and NIH are making the problem worse.

Summer salads are popular in the LGBTQ+ community. But this summer, a tiny parasite is causing concern across the United States.

The parasite is called Cyclospora. It lives on fresh produce, like salad leaves. It causes watery diarrhea and stomach cramps. Many people feel very sick for weeks.

Health experts are worried. The Trump administration has cut funding to important health agencies. These include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These agencies normally track and stop outbreaks like this one.

Without enough funding, the CDC cannot respond as quickly. It is harder to warn the public in time. It is also harder to find the source of the parasite fast.

Queer communities often face extra health challenges. Access to good healthcare is not always equal. Many LGBTQ+ people already distrust the health system. Cuts to public health funding make this worse.

Doctors and health workers are asking people to be careful. Here is what you can do to stay safe:

Always wash your salad leaves carefully. Use clean running water. Even pre-washed bags of salad should be washed again at home. Try to buy local produce when possible. Farmers markets can be safer, but always wash everything first.

If you feel sick after eating salad, see a doctor quickly. Cyclospora needs medicine to go away. It does not get better on its own. Tell your doctor what you have eaten recently.

The LGBTQ+ community has always fought for its health rights. From the AIDS crisis to COVID-19, queer people have had to push for attention and care. This summer is no different.

Health is a right for everyone. Cutting funding to health agencies puts all people at risk. Queer people deserve safe food and good healthcare. Stay informed, stay careful, and look after each other this summer.
