Time for inclusive healthcare for LGBTQ+ people
LGBTQ+ people still face problems in healthcare too often. COC Netherlands calls for better healthcare worker training and more inclusive policies.
LGBTQ+ people deserve good and safe healthcare. Yet many LGBTQ+ people experience problems at doctors or hospitals. This must change.
Many healthcare workers lack knowledge about LGBTQ+ health. Because of this, LGBTQ+ patients sometimes feel misunderstood. Some don't even dare be honest about who they are. This has serious consequences for their health.
Transgender people often face long waiting times for treatment. They sometimes wait years for proper medical care. This causes significant stress and mental health problems. Bisexual people and lesbians also don't always receive appropriate care. Their specific health needs are often overlooked.
COC Netherlands calls attention to these problems. The organization wants better training for healthcare workers. They must learn to treat LGBTQ+ patients respectfully and with care. They also need more knowledge about specific LGBTQ+ health issues.
Inclusive care means everyone is welcome and valued. It means doctors don't make assumptions about patients. It also means space for honest conversations exists. LGBTQ+ people must be able to be themselves at the doctor.
Good examples already exist in the Netherlands. Some healthcare providers and hospitals actively work on inclusivity. They train staff and adjust their communication approach. This strategy works and can inspire others.
COC calls on the government to take action now. Policy is needed that makes inclusive care mandatory. Healthcare organizations must be encouraged to improve. Only then can healthcare be fair for everyone.
Good healthcare is a basic right for all people. LGBTQ+ people deserve the same quality care as everyone else. It's time the Netherlands takes steps forward.
