Ghana's parliament has passed a new law. This law makes LGBTQ+ activity illegal. Many people in the LGBTQ+ community are now very scared.

The new law is very strict. It criminalises identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer. It also makes promoting LGBTQ+ activities illegal. People who break this law can go to prison. The prison sentence is between three and ten years.

Community groups say people are panicking. Many LGBTQ+ people fear losing their homes. Others worry about losing their jobs. Some are scared they will not get healthcare anymore. These are basic needs that everyone deserves.

The law still needs to be signed by President John Dramani Mahama. If he signs it, it becomes official. Rights groups are urging him not to sign it. They say the law puts vulnerable people in danger.

Human rights organisations around the world are reacting strongly. They say the law violates basic human rights. Everyone has the right to live safely and freely. Sexual orientation and gender identity should not be crimes.

Ghana is not the only African country with such laws. But this new law is seen as one of the harshest. It specifically targets identity, not just behaviour. This means a person can be punished simply for who they are.

LGBTQ+ people in Ghana are now making difficult choices. Some are thinking about leaving the country. Others are hiding their identity more than before. Support networks are working hard to help people stay safe.

International pressure is growing. Other governments and global organisations are watching closely. They are calling on Ghana to protect the rights of all its citizens. LGBTQ+ rights are human rights, advocates say.

The situation in Ghana is a reminder of how important legal protections are. Without them, vulnerable communities can face serious harm. The world is watching what President Mahama will decide.
