It feels good to mark an important milestone. Exactly 25 years ago, Netherlands opened doors for same-sex marriage. A moment that changed everything for many gays and lesbians.

That decision was not obvious. Netherlands was among the first countries worldwide daring this step. In 2001, gay and lesbian couples could finally marry, just like everyone else. No exceptions, no separate rules. Simply the same right.

A quarter century later, remembering this moment still matters greatly. Because for many people, this meant everything. Finally they could recognize their love the same way as their parents, friends and colleagues. No compromises. No waiting.

Netherlands showed that it was possible. Other countries followed our example. Now same-sex couples can marry in over thirty countries. It started here, 25 years ago. Reason enough to look back today and celebrate that decision. This was good for our country.
