Maryland introduces new legislation that tackles discrimination in schools more broadly. The law protects all students, including transgender youth.

Bill HB 649 received support from the House on March 23. One hundred voted for it, thirty-five against. Now the Senate must decide. A hearing took place on April 1.

The law gives much more power to the state. The Civil Rights Commission can now take action against discriminating schools. Students and parents can sue schools if this happens.

The protection is very broad. The law forbids discrimination based on skin color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability and more. This applies to all school activities. From admission to sports to bathrooms.

The law affects not only schools. Universities and other educational institutions must comply too. A student can file a complaint with the principal or the commission. Or they can go to court.

More American states introduce similar rules. The regulations come amid fierce debates about transgender rights in education. Supporters say students need better protection. Opponents fear schools lose their freedom.
