NRW Minister-President honors queer activists with state decoration
Minister-President Hendrik Wüst decorated 15 people in North Rhine-Westphalia. They work for a diverse and inclusive society.
Minister-President Hendrik Wüst presented the State Merit Order of North Rhine-Westphalia. He honored 15 people committed to diversity and inclusion.
Volker Beck was among the recipients. He is a prominent politician and longtime queer activist. Beck fought long for equal rights for LGBTQ+ people in Germany.
Two actors also received the decoration. Georg Uecker and Claus Vinçon starred in the popular series 'Lindenstraße'. They played a same-sex couple in that show. That was remarkable and groundbreaking for its time.
The series 'Lindenstraße' ran from 1985 to 2020. It was one of Germany's first TV series with a gay couple as leads. Many viewers learned to embrace homosexuality in a positive way.
Minister-President Wüst stressed the importance of their work. He said open, diverse societies do not happen automatically. People like these honorees make the difference, Wüst stated.
The State Merit Order of North Rhine-Westphalia is an important state prize. The state awards it to people contributing greatly to society. It is remarkable that multiple queer activists are honored this year.
The recognition shows that North Rhine-Westphalia's politics takes queer achievements seriously. Activists and organizations reacted positively to the ceremony. They see it as an important signal from government.
Yet critical voices also emerged. Some activists say recognition is nice but concrete political steps remain necessary. Discrimination against LGBTQ+ people is still a problem in Germany.
The ceremony took place in an official event in North Rhine-Westphalia. Wüst personally spoke about each recipient's achievements. He called their work inspirational for all of society.
