Several organizations want the Senate to pass new legislation. This law must ban conversion therapy in the Netherlands.

Conversion therapy attempts to change someone's sexual orientation or gender identity. Scientists agree: it does not work. It is also very harmful to those who undergo it.

LGBTQ+ people undergoing conversion therapy often develop serious mental health problems. These include depression, anxiety disorders, and even suicidal thoughts. Young people are especially vulnerable to this harm.

COC Netherlands is one organization demanding action. COC has fought for LGBTQ+ rights for many years. They believe the government must protect people against these practices.

Organizations are now specifically targeting the Senate. The Senate must approve the law before it becomes valid. Without Senate support, no ban will happen.

Conversion therapy is already banned in other countries. France, Germany, and Malta have already introduced bans. The Netherlands is falling behind these nations.

Supporters of a ban say it is a human rights issue. Everyone has the right to be themselves. The government must protect that right.

Opponents sometimes argue a ban limits religious freedom. Conversion therapy is sometimes offered by religious organizations. But advocates emphasize: faith does not justify harm.

The Senate appeal comes at a crucial moment. There is increasing political pressure to take action. More people are speaking about their negative conversion therapy experiences.

COC and other organizations hope the Senate acts quickly. Every day without a ban is a day people can suffer harm. The message is clear: protect LGBTQ+ people now.
