A major new report from Amnesty International shows a big problem in UK media. News outlets are writing too much negative content about trans people.

The report looked at UK media coverage from January 2020 to April 2025. Researchers found that four major UK news outlets published almost 17,000 articles about trans-related issues. That is a very large number.

This is surprising for one important reason. Trans people make up only about 0.5% of the UK population. That is just one in every two hundred people. Yet the media covers trans topics as if they are a huge national issue.

Amnesty International says this coverage is "disproportionate." This means the amount of coverage does not match reality. Most of the articles were also negative in tone. This kind of reporting can cause real harm to trans communities.

Experts have warned about this problem for years. Negative media coverage can affect how the public thinks about trans people. It can also affect how politicians make decisions. Trans people may feel unsafe or unwelcome in society because of this coverage.

The report is an important reminder of the power of media. Journalists and editors choose which stories to tell. They also choose how to tell them. When a small minority group receives constant negative attention, it creates a distorted picture.

LGBTQ+ organisations across the UK have welcomed the Amnesty report. They say it confirms what trans people already experience every day. Many trans people say they avoid reading the news because it makes them feel attacked.

Amnesty International is calling on UK media outlets to change their approach. They want news organisations to report on trans issues in a more fair and balanced way. They also want journalists to include trans voices in their stories more often.

The report is one of the most detailed studies of trans media coverage ever done in the UK. It adds to growing evidence that the British press treats trans people unfairly. Campaigners hope it will lead to real change in how newsrooms work.
