Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has advocated for LGBTQ+ people's rights. He did this at a cultural event in the capital Kyiv.

An LGBTI activist asked Zelensky a direct question. He asked if queer people are treated equally in Ukraine. Zelensky responded openly and positively.

The president stated that queer people have absolutely equal rights. This was a clear statement for many Ukrainians. LGBTQ+ rights remain a sensitive topic in the country.

Ukraine is currently at war with Russia. Yet social issues like equal rights remain important. Many Ukrainian LGBTQ+ activists advocate for their community during the war.

In Russia, LGBTQ+ rights are being increasingly restricted. The Russian government views the 'LGBTQ+ movement' as extremist. This makes Zelensky's comments particularly striking.

Zelensky has previously sent positive signals too. He has not spoken against the LGBTQ+ community. However, Ukraine still lacks legal recognition of same-sex relationships.

Activists hope this changes soon. They see Zelensky's words as a step forward. For many queer Ukrainians, presidential recognition is already meaningful.

The Kyiv event showed culture and politics converging. Queer people in Ukraine want to be visible. They want to be heard by their own president.

Zelensky's response was welcomed by LGBTQ+ organizations. They now hope for concrete actions. Words matter, but new laws do too.
